Austria and the Czech Republic both have a well-developed network of cycling routes. Some of these are cross-country routes, while there are many other, small countryside asphalt or even dirt cycling paths. Most of them are well marked, and you can feel quite safe while sharing your way with others.

Except for the winter, the climate in the area between Vienna and Prague is suitable for your mini-touring bike ride. The people are welcoming, and there is a lot to see along your way. I would urge you not to skip visiting both Vienna and Prague, as well as other cities like Brno, and some of the lovely towns, like Litomyšl.

Our Self-Guided Cycling Trip from Vienna to Prague by Bicycle in Brief

This trip will take you from Vienna to Prague by bicycle, without using any other means of transportation. It assumes that you begin your journey from Vienna airport, and your destination is Prague airport. Naturally, you can make some route adjustments, like starting in Vienna city or spending more time in Prague, but this basic plan can still serve you as a guideline.

There are so many options to choose from while riding from Vienna to Prague by bicycle, especially in the Czech Republic. This route was planned so that the fitness requirement would be Moderate in most days. and the ride would be mainly on small, countryside roads. Still, it does not skip the main attractions.

After leaving Vienna you will start cycling north, towards the Czech border. After three days you will find yourself approaching Brno, where you will stay at the Grandezza Hotel Luxury Palace hotel, located in the city center. Then you will continue riding in the countryside, and at some point, you will find yourself riding along the Labe River (also called Elba River in Germany).

On your final day you will cross the beautiful city of Prague, and it is up to you to decide how much time you want to spend exploring the city using your bicycle, and in what way.

Vienna to Prague Trip Details – Day by Day

Pre Departure Day 1 (Optional)

Depands on the time of day when you land at Vienna airport, you can either stay at one of the hotels near the airport (such as the MOXY Vienna Airport), take a short ride towards Vienna city center and spend your night there, or, if you have the time and energy, start your ride, as described below.

Day 1

You will start your bicycle trip from Vienna to Prague at Vienna airport. The first Kilometers are still an urban type of cycling road, but very fast you will approach the Austrian countryside. This is a kind of warmup day.

Day 2

Today you will continue riding mainly in Austria. Afternoon you will cross the Austrian – Czech border, and start your ride on one of the many Czech cycling routes. Visiting some Towns and villages, but mainly riding in the calm countryside.

Day 3

This day is similar to the previous one. the topography is quite hilly, and the routes are well marked. on the last hour of the ride, you will approach the city of Brno, the 2’nd largest city in the Czech republic. I suggest you not arrive there too late, as the city center and the hotel you are going to stay in deserve your time there.

Day 4

Full of energy, after a good night sleep and a wonderful breakfast at the Grandezza Hotel Luxury Palace you will start another cycling day in on your way from Vienna to Prague.

At first you will cross the northern city of Brno, heading to another day in the Czech countryside. You will ride on asphalt or dirt cycling roads while climbing some small hills. on its last part, you will ride along a nice river that flows from Vír Dam to your final destination, Hotel Vír near Vír Lake and Dam.

Day 5

After visiting Vír Dam you will start a steep climb along lake Vír. It is quite demanding but very rewarding. Take a short break at one of the spots along the way for a scenic overview of this man-made lake and the forest surrounding it.

Leaving lake Vír, you will ride along the countryside. On the final part of the day will ride on some small and midsize roads, approaching the city of Litomyšl. I suggest you leave some time to visit Smetana square (the main city square).

Day 6

Today you will ride along some small rivers and lakes. From now on (except for the final part of the last day, when you climb from Prague to PRG Airport) the routes are quite flat. At the final part of the day, you will reach the town of Pardubice, your final destination.

Day 7

Riding From Brno to Prague via Litomyšl

Today you will start riding along or near the Labe River, the main river in Czech Republic. Most of the ride is on paved trails, but from time to time you can choose to use small, dirt trails, or even some single-tracks. You might find it quite different, and enjoyable.

As this special riding day comes to its end you will reach your final destination: the city of Kolin, with its small roads and nice square. You can go out for a local dinner, or eat in the hotel’s restaurant.

Day 8

Riding From Brno to Prague via Litomyšl

In most parts of today’s route you will ride on cycling routes laying along the river. Along the way you may find some nice places to stop for refreshment. I would suggest you visit the city of , or . You can also try one of the coffee places along the river.

As you are approaching the outskirts of Prague, the route along the Labe river gets more crowded with pedestriens and other cyclists. There is a point where you leave the route along the river, and climb towards your final destination.

Day 9

Your final cycling day is different from the other days. At first, you will ride downwards along a small stream that is feeding the Vltava river. Once in the city, you should visit some of its beautiful attractions.

After visiting Karl’s bridge you can enjoy a coffee in one of the many coffee shops on the western side of the bridge. Then you will start climbing towards your final destination: Prague Airport.

Arriving at the Courtyard by Marriott Prague Airport (or any other airport hotel) you can pack your bikes and spend a relaxing evening.
